Lesson Time! Six tips for creating awesome web content

It’s a fascinating and scary time to be in the editorial media business right now. The industry is changing fast and there’s no precedent for the future. Someone once likened it to being the Red Queen in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass — always running to stay in the same place. It might have been me. I’m not sure.

There was a time, not too long ago, when only those with at least a modicum of skill and a basic grasp of the English language wrote articles. Others read them, and wrote unreadable letters to the author. That’s not the case anymore. There’s an infinite amount of available space for content (or there might as well be, for our purposes) and a massive number of people out there gunning to fill it. Now the others are writing their own articles. They do it for practically nothing. They do it for free. Many of them can barely form a sentence, don’t know the difference between a subject and an object and spell definitely “definately,” loser “looser” and – my favourite – writing “writting.”

Recent on Workopolis: Would you give your Facebook password to a potential employer?

Postmedia reports that a man named Rob MacLeod says that in 2009, he was asked by an interviewer for his Facebook login and password so the interviewer could screen MacLeod’s photos as part of the consideration process. The story goes that when MacLeod asked why this was necessary, the interviewer implied that he must “have something to hide.”

Of course, the question on everyone’s mind is “WHAT? Can they DO THAT???” (Or some variation thereupon.)

Recent on Eat This: Former Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen releases maybe the most cliché music video ever

Oh. Wow. I’m pretty sure Taylor Momsen, formerly of TV’s Gossip Girl, and her band Pretty Reckless, have crammed every possible punk rock/rebel cliché into this four minute video for the song “My Medicine” (not to be confused with Snoop Doog’s “My Medicine”).

For the record, I actually kind of think her band is pretty good, but I fear there’s been a wee bit of overaccessorizing in a bid to showcase badassery.

Here’s a rundown of all the overused tropes of the firebrand displayed in the video:

Recent on Eat This: Jerry Lee Lewis marrying cousin’s ex wife

Jerry Lee Lewis is supposedly getting married again, if you believe the National Enquirer.

The tabloid reports that the 76-year-old rock pioneer is going for marriage number 7 with Judith Brown – the ex-wife of Lewis’ cousin Rusty. Rusty is the young brother of Myra Gale Brown, who became Jerry Lee’s third wife in 1957, when she was 13 years old.

At the time, the relationship caused a big scandal and got Jerry Lee blacklisted from radio. His career never fully recovered.

The Enquirer says Rusty was married to Judith for 24 years until Jerry Lee, as Rusty tells it, stole his wife.

Recent on Eat This: Did the media make too much of M.I.A.’s digit malfunction?

It was the bird flip that ricocheted around the world!

Now Madonna has commented on M.I.A. giving the finger to America during last week’s Super Bowl half time show.

The rapper was performing with the elder stateswoman of pop when the “digit malfunction” occurred, prompting a barrage of outrage and media coverage. News followed that M.I.A. could be forced to pay any ensuing fines out of her own pocket, due to an indemnity clause. And people are still talking about it almost a week later, which is, like, a year in contemporary pop culture news time.

This week on Eat This! – Steven Tyler’s national anthem unfairly blasted? Poll!

Dissing American national anthem performances is a new national pastime, I guess.

Among recent renditions that have sparked criticism are Christina Aguilera’s at last year’s Super Bowl where she flubbed a line of lyrics and people reacted as though she burned the freakin’ flag and slaughtered a bald eagle – I’m no fan of Christina’s singing but the public/media reaction to that was ridiculous. Ditto for Scotty McCreery at the World Series.

Now folks are bashing Steven Tyler’s Star Spangled Banner at the AFC Championship game between the New England patriots and the Baltimore Ravens…read the rest at Eatthis.inmusic.ca
